So NOT the mermaid I had in mind

Handwritten page of a diary dated May 29, 2017

… went to Frankenmuth with them in the first place because I wanted to see the “balloon glow,” which is supposed to be legend…ary — all those hot air balloons lit up after the sun goes down. But FAIL. It got rained out. So at breakfast, Grandma says she has a big surprise to make up for it. Except it turns out all she had planned was a trip to the giant Christmas store. I’m not even a big fan of Christmas when it’s December, but on Memorial Day weekend? DONE.

But I went along, like a good sport (partly because Dad took my cell phone away since I was texting too much, and I thought if I pretended to “be in the present” (his words) maybe he’d break down and give it back to me sooner.) Then Grandma says she’ll buy each of us our own ornament (whatevs). I looked all over that place and didn’t find anything epic. Then McKayla yells down from upstairs, says “Come up here, there’s a mermaid.” I said, “It’s not ‘The Little Mermaid’ is it?” (The Little Mermaid is … NO.). She says it’s not. So I drag myself all the way up there, and let’s just say, well, let’s just say I didn’t end up buying it.

The mermaid and the starfish

Handwritten page of a diary dated July 25, 1962

…  because Freddy (my nephew Freddy, not my ex-boyfriend Freddy) (of course) said I could read the essay he wrote.

I unzipped his 3-ring binder and a page from a magazine fell out. Now either he is shopping for a new bathing suit, or he is feeling lustful about a scantily dressed mermaid. I didn’t want to embarrass him, but … well, I did think it was funny, so I asked him about it. He hemmed and hawed and finally said “Oh, we’re studying mermaids in … um … Biology class … no … I mean Art class.”

So I told him I wanted some drawings or paintings for my refrigerator. Now he’ll feel obligated to do it. Tee hee.

Mermaid Brand Oysters

Handwritten page of a diary dated April 14, 1964

I always liked mermaids, but now I saw a sign for oysters called Mermaid oysters, and the mermaid on the sign is the most beautiful one I’ve ever seen. I love her so much that I want to learn to like oysters even though they are the slimiest food in the world.

I went to the library and I learned that ancient Romans loved oysters and sent their slaves to England to collect oysters to bring back for them. I learned that oysters have colorless blood. And I learned that when some little outside object gets trapped inside an oyster, it produces some calcium and protein to coat the object and over time, it becomes a pearl. I have a genuine pearl on a locket and now I look at it in a whole new way.

I hope when I’m an adult, I will look like that mermaid on the sign. Even if it means I will have to grow a tail, I wouldn’t mind. I really wouldn’t.

Mermaids are real

Handwritten page of a diary dated October 9, 2008

never believe anything I say. I said I thought mermaids could exist and then I found this photo of a mermaid corpse, so maybe they’ll listen more when I say something.

I still can’t exactly explain how a human respiratory system could breathe underwater all the time. I ordered a book called “How to Breathe Underwater” but it turned out to be a collection of short stories. So I gave it to my aunt for her birthday.

I looked on the internet and found a page that says “what is the human world record for holding their breath underwater the longest?” and someone answered “1 year” so maybe that was written by someone who knows a new breathing secret that could explain it. A hippo can hold his breath for a long time and so can David Blaine.

This is my new favorite song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZLhUik0tSU
